We are putting together our 50th Hartford Union High School Reunion and have lost contact information for one of our "Class of '62" classmates, Jennifer (Guin) Lounsbury, Mrs. Monte Lounsbury.

In doing a "Google" search, your interesting family tree web site came up and it appears to be of the same family line as Monte & Jennifer.

After they retired from running the golf course in Lake Mills in 2007, Jennifer related by phone to another classmate that they were moving to Florida temporarily while their retirement home was being built in North Carolina, but we are unable to find any contact information on the typical search web sites.

Lt. Commander Ralph Emerson Loundsbury

I noted a reference to Lt. Commander Ralph Emerson Loundsbury in a story about The Dickerson, a destroyer lost to kamikazes in WWII. My father, LT JG James D. Ebert, who passed away in 2001 spoke of Ralph fondly. Dad was senior survivor, having been blown clear off the bridge and burned during the attack that killed Cpt. Ralph. A series of clear accounts of that attack, written by survivors, is available in a book called Tempest Fire and Foe. I bought it on Amazon. It would be a good addition to your family archives.

Your #17: John Milton Lounsbury born 28 DECEMBER 1873 in Watertown, Ixonia Township, Jefferson Co., WI. He WAS NOT BORN IN MANITOWOC CO., WI, but died there. He has a WWI Draft Card, which gives me his middle name.

Thomas Lounsbury, who died during WWII, was NOT DIVORCED from Georgia Whiting. She remained a widow for quite some time after his death, and then remarried. She lived with her parents while he was in service and after Thomas Lounsbury's death. One of the obits says survived by his wife and two children. Whoever sourced that they were divorced is incorrect.

On your No. 42: The correct spelling is HAUGE. Alice B. Lounsbury, daughter of Fremont Lawson Lounsbury and PRIEBE was born 03 June 1910 in Madison, Dane County, WI. Married HOWARD LEROY HAUGE ca 1929-1930 in Madison, Dane County, WI. His parents were of Norwegian descent. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin after their marriage. Yes, he worked for an insurance company as a head in Flushing, New York. HOWARD LEROY HAUGE born 15 Dec 1906 in Westby, Christiana Township, Vernon County, WI; died 28 MAR 1986 in Pompano Beach, Broward County, FL. ALICE B. LOUNSBURY HAUGE died 25 APR 1976 in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, FL. They had children who were born in Madison, WI, but unknown names.

Father of Three Dies at 30 years.

Gordon Lounsbury died suddenly at his home at 131 South St. this morning. He was 30 years old and the father of three small children. Lounsbury had been employed at the Alloy Products Corp. for the past nine years and was a member of the First Presbyterian church. He was born in Sherry, Wis., on March 31, 1919. Lounsbury had been ill for several days with a type of influenza. He worked for the shipping room of the Alloy Products corp. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children, Lynn, 10, Tommy, 6, and Barbara 4. Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Lounsbury, 203 Dunbar Ave.; a brother, Floyd, who is a professor at Yale University; and a sister, Elva of Pittsburgh.

The Rev. Aubrey Young will conduct funeral services at the Lyle-Tuschen funeral home. Internment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. tomorrow.

NOTE: Unknown if his wife remarried, but the two daughters, Lynn and Barbara died. Unknown when. The only child who lived was Thomas, who married twice, and died in Racine, Racine County, WI. See his SSDI.

Elva Louise Lounsbury born 07 July 1916 in Sherry, Wood Co., WI; died 07 NOV 2003 in Delavan, Walworth County, WI; burial at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha, WI. Unknown what her occupation was. She lived in Pittsburgh, PA, lived in Dundee, IL, and in WI.

NOTE: Somewhere someone has noted a 1930 US Census in Michigan for Fremont L. Lounsbury. He would be the son of IRA DANIEL LOUNSBURY. In the 1920 US Census he and his family were living in Seattle, King Co., WA. and he was working for a security company Anyone who views that 1930 US Census can plainly see where he was. But, that is him. There is no 1930 US Census for his wife or children, who were probably living back in WI at the time.

Current editor Bill Mac Donald has served for many years. He has been efficient and able. For many of us, he has been the "call and information center" for all things Lounsbury (however your family spelled the name.) Bill is facing recurring health concerns and thinks it is time for orderly succession planning. In short, the L Tree is looking for a new editor. Ideally this person would have an "L" name, but as Bill has so ably proved, it is not an absolute requirement.

John Freund on Robert Lounsbury & descendents

In the seventeenth issue of the Lounsbury Tree is an article by John Freund entitled "Robert Lounsbury and some of his descendants in western New York." Bill Mac Donald has drawn out this excellent article and placed it in Adobe Acrobat format so that the orignial tables retain their form. Many thanks to our good editor.

Some find Adobe Acrobat a very large program for reading pdf files such as the Freund article. Windows computers that find the large program a challenge migh find the smaller (and still free) Primopdf program more palatable.

Benjamin Piper Lounsbury & Grandaughter Alice Lounsbury

Benjamin Piper Lounsbury was born January 25, 1851 and lived in Wisconsin until moving to the Fontanelle, Iowa area in 1883 where he bought a farm. He married Ellen Lucillia Aspinwall and they had two children, Agnes, and Benjamin Howard. He, (B.P.L) died February 1926. Alice, my mother, was born October 6, 1906 to B.H.L and Edna Woodruff and is still going strong, for 102! This picture of grandfather and graddaughter was taken in 1917 near Canby, Iowa.

Richard Parker about Alice Gwendolyn Lounsbury

My mother, Alice Gwendolyn Lounsbury/Parker will turn 102 on Oct 6, 2008. A large gathering of relatives will meet for the 13th straight year to celebrate the event. With two children and their spouses to keep track of her, she still lives alone in her own home.

Her "line", I guess you call it, is Richard, Richard, Henry, Nathan, Nathan, Daniel, Ira, Benjamin, Benjamin.

She is the eldest of seven children of Benjamin Howard Lounsbury and Edna May Woodruff L. The only other surviving child is Elinore, the youngest (83).

Apparently the Lounsburys heeded the word to "be fruitful and multiply".

I am Richard Parker. Not a historian exactly because I don't have the concentration or patience, but a lot of the stuff seems to accumulate around here. My aunt, Helen Lounsbury did an awful lot of the work of excavating information years ago.

Lounsbury Tree -- almost done

Bill Mac Donald has scanned all the Lounsbury Trees he has and I have copied over from Jim Jurista's site (with his permission) all the Trees he had there (he plans not to continue to host that site, alas). We have the complete series now posted, except for three issues (15, 38, 39). If anyone can supply these, the series would be complete.

A huge Thank You to Bill for all the work in scanning all the past issues and to previous editors for all the work they put into this great labor.

Issue 21 and a note about orientation

Editor Bill Mac Donald has scanned another back issue of the Lounsbury Tree, No. 21, and I have added it to the list in the right column.

A word about orientation. Some of the Lounsbury Trees were published in landscape orientation and some portrait. If you are printing them out to read, it makes no difference. But you could get a kink in your neck if you tried to read a landscape-orientation Tree on your computer. However, the Adobe Acrobat Reader has an icon that looks like a curved arrow which allows you to change the orientation of an Adobe document. And you can enlarge the print as well.

Morley Lounsbury
Morley Lounsbury passed away in Westminister Hospital, London, (Ontario), on Monday, January 18th, where he had been a patient for some years.
Mr. Lounsbury was born in Wheatley on December 23, 1884, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Burwell Lounsbury, and lived in Wheatley and district in his earlier days.
Survivors are an aunt, Mrs. Howard Rymal of Leamnington and several neices and nephews.
Funeral services were held today (Thursday) at 2p.m. from the Smith Funeral Home, Leamington, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington.

Carlos Lounsbury, 72, of 3420 West 189th st., Torrance, California passed away at his home on Thursday, August 1st
The funeral was held from the McMillen Funeral Home, Gardenia, California, on Monday, August 5th.
Mr. Lounsbury was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Burl Lounsbury and was a resident of Wheatley several years ago.
He is survived by his wife; two step-children, and a brother, Morl;ey, in Westminster Hospital, London.

I've found that there are many questions that come up frequently when researching the Lounsbery family. Hopefully, this page will help answer some of your questions, too.

Without further ado, here are the FAQs and answers:

My name is spelled Lounsbury (or Lounsberry,). Is that the same thing?

Where does my branch of the family fit into the larger tree?

I frequently get e-mail telling me that someone is not in the on-line family tree. In most cases, an entire branch is seemingly missing. Please remember that the on-line tree is a small subset of the known family history, perhaps only 15-20%. I have spent some time lobbying John Freund (see next section) to provide me with his computer copies of the tree, so that I may publish them on the web. But, as I have indicated elsewhere in this site, John is quite serious about his work and does not wish to see duplication errors arise, and he also is concerned about researchers using information that is incomplete.

What references exist for locating Lounsbery/Lounsbury/Lounsberry information?

Some Descendants of Richard Lounsberry of Rye, NY. This is a book by John Freund of Victor, NY; it contains the most comprehensive structure and descriptions available pertaining to the descendants of Richard. Unfortunately, the book is now out of print and copies are no longer available from any source I know of.
The Lounsbury Tree. This is a twice-yearly newsletter, edited and published by Al Lounsbury of Saratoga Springs, NY. It contains lots of information about reunions, queries, obituaries, and historical events related to the Lounsbury clan.
Lounsbury : origin, meaning, and significance, with emphasis on the evidence and conclusions concerning the relationship of the Lounsbury family to royalty in the Middle Ages. This is a book by Raymond H. Lounsbury; here are some relevant details from the U.S. Library of Congress' search site:

On-Line Databases.I had maintained a set of HTML files, generated from genealogical software, that were accessible on my web site. For various reasons - primarily the inclusion of living persons - I have decided to remove these files.

What is the "Pennoyer Scholarship"?

One of Robert's children was Elizabeth Pennoyer, who married Richard Lounsberry. Because Richard is considered the forefather of all Lounsberrys in the U.S., anyone with that surname or descended from someone with that surname is probably eligible for the scholarship. Of course, you'll need to get in to Harvard first.

How can I learn more about genealogy in general? There are many excellent resources available on the Internet. Check out some of the links on the right side of the blog.
